How do Ceramic Bio Filter Rings work?
Ceramic Bio Filter Rings are highly porous, providing a large surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow on. Bacteria are necessary in the filtration process to detoxify Ammonia that is produced by excess food and faecal matter inside your aquarium. High levels of ammonia are toxic to aquatic life and can effect other water parameters such as pH and oxygen.
Where should Ceramic rings be used?
Ceramic Bio Filter Rings should be placed in your filter or aquarium sump, ensuring an adequate flow of water through the media to provide the bacteria with oxygen and allow them to efficiently process aquarium waste.
How much media do I need?
The general rule of thumb is 1 litre of media per 100 litres (26 Gal) of aquarium water.
We have the option of 100g, 250g, 500g and 1Kg packs of Ceramic Bio Filter Rings available to best suit your setup.
Setup Instructions:
Ceramic Bio Filter Rings should be rinsed in aquarium water before you place it in your filter. Simply remove a small amount of water from your aquarium, rinse the Ceramic Bio Filter Rings and then place it in your filter. (Do not rinse with tap water as it contains chlorine and chloramine which can kill the bacteria). Bacteria colonies can take 3-4 weeks to develop. During this time, monitor your water parameters such as Ammonia and pH closely.
For new aqauriums, it is recommended that you only lightly stock with aquatic animals during this 3-4 week bacteria colonisation period.
If adding to an existing cycled aquarium, it is recommended to change out no more than half of the pre-existing bio media, allowing a period of time for the bacteria colonies to establish on the new Ceramic Bio Filter Rings.
